ABOUT THE NATIONAL CENTER FOR HEALTHCARE LEADERSHIP (NCHL)

NCHL is dedicated to advancing healthcare leadership and organizational excellence by building diverse, inclusive, and collaborative relationships in the US and abroad. NCHL is widely recognized as the premier source for evidence-based healthcare leadership practices, cultivating communities for peer collaboration across organizations, and collectively developing industry models and benchmarks to improve healthcare.

ABOUT THE NATIONAL HEALTHCARE LEADERSHIP SURVEY (NHLS)

One of these benchmarking efforts is the NHLS, which collects information about leadership development efforts at hospitals and health systems in the US. Survey questions and responses are mapped to the following 12 dimensions of leadership:

1. Strategically aligning leadership development
2. Attracting and selecting leaders
3. Preparing new leaders for success
4. Talent management and succession planning
5. Providing developmental experiences
6. Providing performance feedback
7. Developing clinical leadership strength
8. Development for diversity & inclusion
9. Incorporating administrative fellowships
10. Monitoring and achieving results
11. Utilizing coaching for leadership development
12. Leadership & well-being

The goal of the NHLS is to enable hospitals and healthcare systems to compare their leadership development efforts with evidence‐based best practices and benchmark their leadership practices in the 12 dimensions. The highest-performing organizations on the NHLS are recognized as Best Organizations in Leadership Development (BOLD).

NCHL uses the NHLS to evaluate the rate of adoption of best practices in the field. Survey data from 2007, 2010, 2014, 2016, 2020, and 2022 provide insight into changes in adoption over time. Given the complexity of leadership development efforts and the breadth of information captured in the NHLS, these data only offer a high-level view of national trends. The NHLS data often can’t capture the complexities of adoption, such as the challenges encountered and the nuances of implementation within a given organization’s culture, values, needs, and strategy.

With the goal of helping US hospitals and healthcare systems improve leadership development at their organizations, NCHL is working with high-performing 2022 NHLS participants to identify their lessons learned. National adoption of best practices from the NHLS data alongside these lessons learned will provide a more robust understanding of the 12 dimensions and their real-world applications.
